Brooklyn Chamber Presents ‘Brooklyn Eats’

“Food is big business in Brooklyn. There are more than 1,000 restaurants across the borough and more than 100 food and beverage manufacturers. No matter how you slice it, bake it or brew it, food is one of the main ingredients in the Brooklyn economy.”

These are the compelling reasons put forth by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce as to why you should be excited about its 12th Brooklyn Eats. Scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the culinary extravaganza will, for a second year, take place at Stage 6, Steiner Studios, in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Brooklyn Eats has grown steadily since 1997, its first year, when just 20 restaurants took part. The twist this year is the inclusion of the “burgeoning ‘Brooklyn Lounge Scene,’” which is drawing people from around the city.

And, as has become tradition since 2002, a portion of the event’s proceeds will fund the Brooklyn Eats Scholarship Awards, which will be presented at the event to three exemplary CUNY students of City Tech’s hospitality management division.

This year’s Brooklyn Eats poster was designed by native Brooklynite Jerome Walford, of The Blue Griffin, an advertising and design studio based in Bay Ridge.

Walford, who is from Crown Heights, has been designing posters since the late ’90s. (Clients have included Yahoo, Samsung and Columbia Medical Center.) This is his first poster design for Brooklyn Eats.

Walford says, “We have been growing tomatoes since last summer, and there is something irresistible about them. Making a tomato the centerpiece of my design for this year’s Brooklyn Eats came as a natural fit. We love the restaurants in Brooklyn and it’s hard to pick just one.”

He adds that he and his wife, who is from Sunset Park, have many good memories from Madiba, in Fort Greene, where they ate often while they were dating.

After a short stint in Manhattan, Walford and his wife moved to Bay Ridge three years ago. “We really love it here,” he says.

Brooklyn Eats is produced by Brooklyn Alliance, the nonprofit, economic development affiliate of the Brooklyn Chamber. Visit www.brooklyneatsonline.com to purchase tickets.
